The store isnt bad at all. The Grocery guys are really friendly and helpful, and they take there time helping you. Not like other places that like to rush through everything. Yes, some products are over priced, but for the stores great location and variety of product choices it sure is a great place to shop. I really dont understand why people have so much negativity. This store is great)

Customer service is terrible. we had a deli clerk yell at my roomate and try and force him to buy deli meat that he didnt want because she made a mistake i also bought a loaf of bread from this store that looked like it had a mouse in it and they are out of alot of products alot of the time ie. frozen juice

2012-01-01 22:02:26

The customer service at this establishment is disgustingly bad. If you are going to shop there only get what you really need because not only is the customer service horrible the prices are just as bad. Walk the extra 20 minutes and go to NoFrills.

To the only person who wrote a decent review for this establishment. I feel you're the uneducated consumer and the one possibly on welfare / verge of bankruptcy since you did mention that you have been a customer for 11 years. If you have been living in this area for 11 years you would notice that it's for the most part university students. I understand that it's a independent grocery store and prices are different but the disgusting lack of customer service and extremely low quality of produce makes it a horrible establishment. If I am paying more money than I need to then I deserve at least decent customer service.

2011-12-06 17:19:52

absolutely disgusting. Hope they go bankrupt

2011-11-18 20:55:29

This is to all the uneducated people complaining about prices..its an independent store prices are higher because cost are higher..e.g no frills buys 10 skids of coke for .99 cents each can sell for 1.49...food cents buys 1 skid for 1.79 each..make sense? if you still don't understand there is a university close by feel free to take a business course. Then again if you are complaining about prices you probably can't afford the school fees so nevermind.I am not surprised there are complaints about prices most of you are probably on welfare or unemployment as the area surrounding the store is not that quite pleasant. The staff is wonderful, they have made many changes and as a customer for over 11 years can appreciate it when you walk into a store and everyone has time to say hi and help you with your needs. Rather than writing bad reviews next time bring your thoughts and opinions to management so they can work on improvements. I'm sure you people are perfect and never make mistakes..right....

2011-11-11 11:50:06

I understand that this market is all about convenience, i don't mind if the prices are a bit higher, but some of the drinks are $1 higher than anywhere else. Rip Off!!

Everybody, if you buy vegetables(especially tomato), remember the product code and make sure the cashier not overcharge you with some other high price code. It happens to me many times!! Be Alert!!

Forgot to mention this do not buy any bread there at least not the ones which are not in the bags. Last time I went there, I saw flyers around the breads... PHEW!!!!

2011-06-02 12:13:22

Cashier overcharged me. I was there to buy my grocery today, the blond girl on the cashier overcharged me on garlic. They have 3 pack garlic (99cent) and other garlic 3.49 per lb. I bought 2 garlics which were to be charge at 3.49 per lb which would not be more than a dollar. But the girl charged me at the 3 pack price...for each of them..dollar each. I told her mistake, instead of fixing her problem she said they are more expensive that's why they are a dollar each. Then she lied to me that she charged me by weigh when I could clear see on the monitor that she charge by number of garlic. I asked her why did u make it 2 lines (she ran each garlic separately), she said it will be cheaper for you because apparently she thinks I am stupid enough to believe her when she said if she weigh together it will be more expensive for me. That outright pissed me so much, I didn't want to argue with the girl.Being an Asian, I am brought up to not to argue. So, I said ok and took the loss.

I have been going to this place for the past 3 years. I know more about the prices than these work few months and quit type of employees. I don't remember seeing anybody working there more than few months.

My suggestion to this business, put some ppl who know how to run the register. I am a student and I hate to pay more than already overpriced products that you carry.

As for that cashier, I hope you read this someday and realize that customers are not stupid and be thankful that I didn't make a scene of your not so honest mistake. The manager need to train them better too.
My review
Pricing -- too expensive. can't afford any of their vegetables. No coupons.
Cashier service -- bad. When they don't know a price, they guess the price and overcharges. (
Stocking -- good. I see the guys are working their ass off stocking. Hope u get better wage.
Variety of products -- poor. not enough variety in vegetables.

But if you live at south of york univeristy (the village) , you have no other choice. This is the only grocery in walking distance.

2011-04-02 09:52:41

Way too expensive...basically rips us students off in a big way. I really only go there in emergencies (when I don't have time to take the viva to walmart). The cashiers are very nice and the staff is helpful...but the produce is awful and the selection is strange to say the least. Basically, the store is all discount food, at non-discount prices.

2011-03-20 21:49:00

This place is terrible. You'd think we were living in beverly hills with the prices they charge in that store. The only reason I go there is because it is the ONLY grocery store that is walking distance from the Village @ York. They need to build a REAL grocery store close by so they can close this excuse of a grocery store down.

2011-03-12 19:11:37

I went in and wanted to purchase some deli meat. The young kid behind the counter had to be called out by another employee because he was in the back. I was having a friend over for fresh deli sandwiches and was excited to have some fresh meat to put on them. When I got home I opened my packages and ALL of the meat was bad. It was all clearly not fresh and smelled horrible. Why would someone sell me this stuff. He just handed it over and let me buy bad meat! Do not shop at the deli section. I ended up throwing everything out and came up with something else to serve. I only go there if I am really desperate. The prices are way too high and when I'm already paying too much, I want it to be fresh!

2010-11-10 17:52:49

Food is not fresh and it's way over priced.

2010-11-02 18:49:31

2010-11-02 16:33:25

foodcents is a horible store prices are inflated and the products are not fresh.
the staff is terrible,I willnever shop there again.

2010-10-24 22:09:24

The place is a rip! they know everything else is too far and they take advantage of us because of it. All the bad things written are absolutely true and I'm not a competitor as one employee suggested.

rude rude rude, flimsy bags and I swear they...Joe and his family...whoever is white in there watch me more cuz im BLACK. I went in there with an Irish girl the second time and no one stared! EXPLAIN THAT?

i dont know the entire place gives me the hibbie jeebies. I only go cuz Im hungry.

2010-10-09 21:12:51

I have been living in the area for over 3 years now. As most of the people here, I'm a student as well. I've been a regular shopper at Foodcents because of its convenient location. Here are my list of pros and cons

PROS
* The only grocery store available in the area
* Wide variety of fruits and vegetables
* Aisles have pretty much whatever you need on a day to day basis
* Wide variety of cheese, milk, eggs and yogurt
* At least to me, the store is mostly clean nowadays

CONS

* WAY too overpriced! I understand why that is but common, don't rip people off!
* Rude staff and cashiers
* Three times I've been ripped off by the cashier. ALWAYS read your receipts.
* Seafood section is on the decline. Bring back more seafood!
* Did I mention they are overpriced?

As for the rotten fruit and vegetables, being VERY honest, I haven't come across any so far. Don't know where you guys are looking. Expired stuff? Never happened with me but then again I don't buy much canned goods.

Overall this store is just OK but they should work on the cons I mentioned before we rename it to CON CENTS!

2010-09-25 16:59:51

Wow I don't know where the other reviewers were at but I find that for a small grocery shop, food cents are offering relatively OK prices. Like most of small shops, branded products come at a premium. But if you're looking for basic stuff (bread, milk, fruits, veggies are so-so), you won't pay that much of a premium. I only began going there so I'm not really sure about the clealiness, but so far so good.

2010-08-05 21:44:29

The ONLY grocery store I have ever shopped at which can't compete with the prices of SERVICED food (i.e. restaurants/fast food.) It is actually cheaper to buy your groceries in the form of delivered pizzas every week than it is to shop at this store.

I can't even begin on the selection of this store... who is in charge of choosing this? Are they drunk? Sometimes you can find 8 brands of conditioner but no shampoo.

Shopping at food cents rivals shopping at a variety store. Students of York University are BEGGING THE COMMUNITY FOR A REAL GROCERY STORE. Please.

2010-06-22 12:06:08

all their fresh products are stale

2010-06-20 20:10:45

poor food quality, terible service

2010-06-06 22:00:03

Keep up the good work Joe!

2010-04-05 10:33:49

Hillarious staff if they write those fake reviews. Nobody would bother googling this unless pissed off or they thought they were tooting their own horn. Its a small store that gouges confused foreign students and those that can't be bothered to lob things through TTC. The food is frequently rank and pop occasionally flat. At one point I recieved a bag of chips that was soggy as though they were watering it down for consumption by senior citizens. If they actually bothered with their products and lowered the price to something competetive they would have hordes of lazy but also poor students making up for the instant gratifcation of ripping off some international student from the village or some chump on his parent's dime.

2010-02-23 09:24:22

convenient location, but the expired/mouldy bread and produce is out of control. There is a significant rodent problem in the store, according to the manager. ( We found that our bread had been hollowed out, with mouse dropping inside).

2010-02-01 10:37:00

its convenient, but they really need to get rid of rotting produce, and expired products. I am thoroughly impressed with their organic products, however i wish they would also bring in organic produce and soy ice cream. D

2010-01-01 13:38:11

overpriced items

2009-12-01 22:01:52

Food nocents is overpriced, they only have 1 cashier open even though 15 people are waiting in line. However, the store is close to me so I walk there sometimes. Their selection is small, and their canned goods are never rotated, so finding dusty and past due products is quite normal. Produce is not fresh but bearable if you search the piles. I guess Joe is struggling, since the quality of the store is going down. Meat is expensive but fresh, SOMETIMES they have a good price on milk. Don't bother buying condiments, (ketchup, relish etc) they are extremely overpriced. Would spend 2.75 and go to nofrills but late at night its the only option.

2009-09-12 23:06:38

I'm a student and it's close by so I've been there.. It's not the best but what stupid people have to realize is that a store that size can't compete with a store like sobeys because they are independant and small so they hold no buying power like huge chains or even large stores do.. Hence why they're overpriced, I'm sure they'd love to lower their prices to bring in more people but their cost is much higher and they would make no profit. For those of you who bitched about having to to there because you're a student, spend the 3 dollars and take the bus to walmart instead of bitching about the store lol, no one is making you go!

I have lived in the area for 35 years... This is the only store that has managed to stay afloat. Dominion tried... No Luck... they downsized the place to it's current form... Them Mr grocer tried... no luck either. The place went bankrupt and a chinese store opened... the worst ever. I shopeed there once. Then Valdi came along, it was ok for a while ... them they went under too. Food Cemnts came along. A small independent store. NOT a chain, they cant compete with the chain stores on price. But not a bad operation. Decent Meat and produce... and pretty well stocked on all groceries for a small store. The Chain stores have abandoned the neighbourhood, They cant nake money here they say. I say lets give Food Cents some support, They are our neighbourhood store after all. It looks like a pretty secent store to me. Give it a try.

2009-08-03 08:18:49

Terribly overpriced! Students go there only when we have no other choice, as it's close by. Would not recommend this store to anybody.

2009-07-09 12:07:09

lol the comments on this are too funny. it is obvious that the few good comments are written by Joe or store personnel. Food Cents is the worst grocery store i think i've ever been to. for its location there is no reason for there prices to be higher than Sobeys which is 1000 X better. Food cents is over priced and should stop trying to fool ppl with their name. I only go there when i am in desperate need because i am a student and live close by. you would think that they would try to entice more business with fair prices to attract students, instead i'm pretty sure every student in the village and surrounding area feel the same. Food Cents BLOWS!

2009-06-26 12:05:10

Store is really dirty and the produce is awful (do they not understand the concept of culling?). Pretty sure these great produce and great prices reviews are being posted by the store itself.

2009-04-06 23:13:49

When Joe owned the place he kept it in tip top shape. No one could touch his produce , now it a run down pig sty.

2009-03-15 21:04:59

Half the time the produce is moldy. Don't mind their meat though.

2009-03-09 20:44:14

FOOD CENTS ROCKS!!!

2008-10-27 17:46:32

poor food and staff, the owner is uncooperative. very dirty store in a very dirty mall

2008-10-15 12:56:28

AAA+++

2008-09-12 16:55:41

Do not go here, not only is it dirty and overpriced, the service is lacking. The owner JOE is very rude.

2008-08-23 11:39:06

i think all these negative comments are written by jealous competitors.

2008-07-13 07:01:34

Definitely dirty, very small selection, and the lack of selection means high prices. But, the biggest thing is the line-ups! I've stopped going there because there is usually one girl on till and LOOOONG line-ups.

2008-05-01 17:54:43

Not bad for pricing & selection....but could be a little cleaner !

2008-03-23 13:34:29

the produce is usually rotten.

2008-02-17 19:28:08

Great Produce... fair Prices.. great friendly staff

2008-02-01 20:22:55

the best fruit and vegetable sin north york

2006-12-14 15:13:33

the best produce in north york, awesome prices

2005-11-26 19:01:55

This grocery store has poor service and is over-priced. Produce is very inconsistant. If you live in this area it is far better to spend the money and order online.
